The Bloc Party member returns with a track based on the African goddess of the ocean
Kele Okereke has released the new acoustic track Yemaya today (28 April) via BMG Music.
Yemaya is the artist’s first single under his full name as Kele Okereke. Previously, he released music under mononym Kele.
“In the west African Yoruba religion, Yemaya is the mother goddess of the ocean, she is kinda the patron saint of pregnant women and fertility,” he explained in the press release. “According to myth, when her waters broke, it caused a great flood creating rivers and streams and the first mortal humans were created from her womb. When I knew we were having a baby she started to be appear in my thoughts and dreams a fair bit.”
A release date and name for his forthcoming solo album is yet to be announced.
