Crack Mix 439:
Alai K

House Disco Funaná

Alai K, also known as Disco Vumbi, steps up for our latest Crack Mix. Based in Berlin, but hailing from Kenya, his work explores the parallels between the polyrhythms and percussive styles of East Africa and the techno exploits of his current stomping ground. His latest release, a debut full-length entitled Kila Mara, further celebrates this cultural exchange.

This mix, however, homes in on dance music and other traditional sounds from his home region, as well as countries such as Zambia and Cape Verde. It’s a bright, nimble and incessant offering that hop-skips with ease between soulful vocal tracks and ecstatic club fuel. “This mix is for listening and dancing. It’s a mix of East African, Zambian, electronic and funaná music,” says Alai K on the recording. “I don’t play this when I play live, but I do when DJing. Sit, stand or dance, let me take you for a ride.”
