To celebrate September’s East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) heritage month, Eastern Margins member Ar (real name Arya Rinaldo) provides the weekend mood with a 51-minute sonic rollercoaster for Crack Mix 591. When moving to London from Jakarta, he brought his collection of rare Asian disco, funk and soul, before fusing rap, electronic and experimental elements that he discovered in the UK.
It makes for a singular sonic signature, which his mix introduces us to, as he blends ESEA hyperpop with experimental club tracks and pit-inducing rap. It’s music that represents just part of what Eastern Margins stands for, who, as a label, party, community and now festival, have been promoting and experimenting with ESEA alternative music and culture since their formation in 2018.
