Earlier this year, Big Dada – the influential, independent label distributed by Ninja Tune – announced that it would be relaunching as an imprint dedicated to Black, POC and minority ethnic artists.
It marked the start of a new chapter in an already culturally-significant story. With a history of releases featuring Hype Williams, Roots Manuva, Ty and Congo Natty, the label symbolises an exploratory and daring strand of Black British music. A vision rooted in heritage but very much future-facing.
To find out more about the second wave of Big Dada, we are hosting a discussion with representatives from the label and their newest signing Yaya Bey on 23 March as part of our digital festival for Supporters. If you haven’t already, sign up and be there.
Get acquainted with the catalogue via this specialist mix stitched together by previous crackaud.io contributor (and now Big Dada A&R) Maral. “The mix highlights all the years Big Dada pushed the boundaries of music and also celebrates the years to come,” Maral told us over email. “I wanted to epitomise this quote from Roots Manuva in sonic form “Big Dada’s unique and it will always be unique because it’s a philosophy, y’know? It’s unique because it dares to stick its neck out and it’s run by people who genuinely love music. It’s not just a record label, it’s a movement.” We hope to continue this legacy with the relaunch.”
