February is Black History Month. To commemorate the occasion – a celebration of culture, achievements and contributions of Black people in the US and beyond – Crack Magazine will be sharing a selection of mixes curated by Black artists, featuring Black artists. From drone to punk, dream pop to indie, we’ll be highlighting genres that are historically seen – and treated – as white, despite having Black origins. Today’s mix comes courtesy of :3LON.
Baltimore-based singer, songwriter and producer :3LON, aka Elon Battle, has a glorious voice. It’s smooth, emotionally-charged and entirely compelling. They’ve put it to good use of late, be it on amapiano-infused collaborations with Hyperdub affiliate Scratcha DVA or more recent solo offerings such as Quantum Leaping – the first release on their very own imprint, PLUR.net. Here though, they hop-skip away from clubbier climes in order to present this hour-long mix of lustrous pop supplied by Black chart-toppers and indie favourites alike. (Think Janet and Brandy, along with Dawn Richard, Solange and KeiyaA.)
An essential listen – not just a guilty pleasure.
