Join Symrun on a 50-minute excursion through the realms of C-Pop.
Symrun is a Leeds-based artist and an affiliate of London label TT. His new album, WDYD?, plots a route through leftfield pop, art rap and saccharine sweet club sounds. Symrun’s neon-hued, melancholia-laced bops are inspired by everything from formative interests to the work of peers such as Don Sinini and Organ Tapes. He also cites music from China and the Chinese diaspora as an influence.
For our latest Specialist Mix, the artist rummages through his personal collection to present a streamlined snapshot of pop music indebted to China.
“These past few years, music from China and the Chinese diaspora has been really influential to me creatively,” says Symrun. “Also, a sociological phenomena, it’s really fascinating to see China’s ascent, and how [Chinese artists] blend and remake pop music textures from other parts of the world. I’ve kept up a stash of the best stuff I’ve heard, and now I’m throwing some of it into this mix!”
