As their first release on XL, gyrofield‘s summer EP These Heavens marked a new chapter for the Hong Kong-born DJ and producer. Exploring themes of nature, shared human experiences and the vastness of the universe with influences ranging from Djrum to Björk, the four-track project exemplified gyrofield’s distinctive take on drum ’n’ bass, merging the atmospheric and experimental with the melodic and emotional.
The artist’s Crack Mix was first performed at an event for the project’s launch, and is led by the same shapeshifting, explorative approach as gyrofield guides us through an hour of wide-ranging sounds they imagine us listening to late in the evening at a warmly-lit basement rave. Get tuned in.
Who: Kiana Li, gyrofield.
What: Folk, electronica, bass.
Where: Born and raised in Hong Kong, now based in Utrecht, Netherlands.
When: I think a mix like this would be fit for a late evening in a warmly-lit basement. However, I actually performed this mix at a VR event for the launch of my EP These Heavens.
Why: Every piece of art is a little snapshot of the artist’s life. Being able to string that together in a DJ set is something you don’t get to do in most other mediums – highlighting the linkages between people, music and the process of creating it. I find it endlessly rewarding to create music that feels like life and is able to join other works in continuous expression of our unique and shared experiences.
