From her work as a successful visual artist to her output as a musician, producer and DJ, KESH’s world is a fluid, ever-evolving patchwork of creative influences, experiences and collaborations. On any given week, you might catch her showing her art in a gallery in New York, working on her music in sessions in LA, or playing a late-night show at a London club.
This wide range of references filters through into her music, which has spanned from warped drum ‘n’ bass to avant-garde experimentalism, and of course, her DJ sets. Here, she takes us on a 46-minute ride through a head rush of different genres, with tracks from Burial, Namasenda and The Prodigy alongside plenty of rap and a handful of unexpected bangers. Pull up.
Who: KESH.
What: Chaos. Calm. Continuing.
Where: I’m from England, south of London, and based in New York, London and LA.
When: I imagine playing this mix in an empty, desolate car park on an industrial estate. Everybody gets sent the address last minute by text and pulls up in hoards. We have the speakers hanging out the back of someone’s car and blast this mix top volume and get it all the way in, under the stars in the night’s sky.
Why: Music is in my heart. I feel at peace when I combine with it. Though my sets are chaotic and wild it soothes my spirit to blend, mix and play all the different works that I discover as I journey through life. Making music is a form of therapy for me; it helps me pull out all the things I keep locked away and turn it into something special to me. I feel inspired by music for it is ever evolving, shifting and shaping as we move forward as a whole. It shapes us as individuals and as a collective. For that I am grateful.
