Crack Mix 603: Gallegos

House Minimal Ambient Breakbeats

Bristol-based DJ and producer Gallegos takes over this week’s Crack Mix with a high-energy hour that moves between breaks, heady house and hypnotic minimal.

As a co-founder of SHAPES and now a Panorama Bar regular, Gallegos has made a name for himself in Bristol and beyond as a DJ who knows how to deliver a good time. As a producer, his music draws from a wide range of genres to forge his own shapeshifting sound – just listen to last summer’s 90s rave-influenced Memories You’ve Memorised, or his eclectic, brand new four-track EP MC. Get locked in.

Who: Gallegos.

Where: I grew up in Cheddar, but I’m currently based in the fine city of Bristol.

What: I enjoy pretty much all genres of electronic music, leaning more towards early sounds. However, this mix includes a load of classic house, deep house, minimal, breaks and ambient.

When: I recorded the mix for that period that could work sometime after the warm-up, when people are settled into the night and moving towards peak time. As for setting the scene, there would be as much smoke as you’re allowed to legally pump a room with, one red light, and one basic strobe light positioned above the crowd.

Why: Making music inspires me because it gives me a chance to purge all my favourite sounds I’ve heard over the years as a raver, all the different genres I went through as I got older, and form my own sound and style. With DJing I really enjoy, and try to introduce people to, a possibly unconventional way of putting tracks together – having the confidence to jump between more than one genre or BPM.
