For Verity Mayes, a.k.a. Maze, music – specifically house – is “a tool to communicate and transcend”. Whether she’s mixing underground bangers or spaced-out prog and acid in London or Berlin, a Maze set is one that’s energetic and transformative, taking us on a journey through emotion as well as sound. Taking over this week’s Crack Mix with a summer warmer that moves through house, deep house and detroit house “best enjoyed with a fine film of sweat over the entire body”, this one’s for bleary-eyed mornings locked in on the dancefloor. Get stuck in.
Who: Maze, but you can call me Verity.
Where: Berlin via London.
What: With this mix I tried to get to a point that doesn’t always happen during a set, but when it does, it’s special – for me at least. It’s meant to first really move the body whilst the heartstrings are being pulled by uplifting yet kinda melancholic sounds. What that does is free up what’s left – the creative mind – to wander. People say that the dancefloor isn’t a spiritual place, but I think it is. Sometimes people are seeking, even if they don’t know what for. When the mind is allowed to wander, and the heart is touched like that, and the music then takes you to some high place, that’s when you can feel present and, perhaps, start to find what you’re seeking. I’ve tried to create that a couple of times in the mix, alongside moments to get loose and joyful as this is, after all, a party.
When: To me, it feels like a summer daytime. Probably the Sunday morning of a festival, but one where people stick around and dance for the whole journey rather than bounce from stage to stage. It’s light and sizzling, best enjoyed with a fine film of sweat over the entire body.
Why: It’s my opportunity to make magic with a room full of strangers. Where, for an hour at least, we can discover and open a door to wonder and connection, and hopefully a yearning to create and bring this feeling (of pretty much the opposite of what we are seeing in the world at the moment) into our everyday.
