D’Monk takes the reigns this week with a 90-minute Crack Mix that dips between broken beat, old school house and jazz for the early hours. It’s a characteristically eclectic spread from the producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist, who’s latest project Shine (released via Errol and Alex Rita’s Touching Bass) brought together electro, broken beat, beatdown and the soul-dance of Detroit. London-based but with close ties to Berlin, D’Monk’s map of influences feels truly fluid, international and ever-expanding, drawing from the parties he’s played as much as hours spent making music with collaborators like Puma Blue and Rosie Lowe behind the scenes. Dive in.
Who: I go by the name D’Monk and I’m from London.
What: In this mix, I tried to catch as many spaces and pockets as I could in 90 mins, dotting between bruk, old school house and some jazz too. There’s a few shades in there.
When: The mix is made for that time of night towards the end, when things are heavy in the dance but transitioning. The music is beginning to stretch out, people are loose and open. Depending on your location, that could be anywhere between 2 and 6am, but you get the picture. Just when things begin to get spacey. I adore that transitional moment in sets.
Why: I have such a deep love for making music, but before anything, I’m a fan and soak myself in music almost all the time. DJing is such a beautiful way to share that and an important responsibility. There’s a lot to it that doesn’t meet the eye. Reading a room, understanding who you’re playing to and striking that delicate balance between playing your favourite cuts but keeping the dancers on their toes.
