DJ Pitch has been firing up the club circuit for over half a decade.
Originally from Watford, Robert Venning left Sheffield University with a classical music degree and a keen ear for opera by way of his upbringing. Now based in London, Venning has gone on to launch the TT and All Centre labels, aiding the rise of some of the scene’s most stirring producers, including Holloway, Alec Pace, BFTT, hmurd, Yushh and object blue.
Venning’s own productions often pivot in the twilight zone of techno and bass-heavy music. With elongated swells and allegro percussive beats, his classical roots are present yet reappropriated. This is best heard on his debut album, It’s Not What You Said, It’s Because You Spoke. Elsewhere, his edits series is testament to his ability to link seemingly contradictory genres; melding amen breaks to drill acapellas, and broken techno to dancehall flavours.
His Sunday Mix instalment embodies this sonic mash-up. “I took this mix as a chance to play a lot of music from myself, the team and big inspirations of mine,” Venning tells Crack Magazine over email. “Music that wouldn’t make it into a club or radio set as it’s not so immediate.”
“I also took it as an opportunity to put tracks together in a much looser style than I usually do,” he adds, “creating loops off the grid as well as bringing in filtering and delay styles that I use a lot in my production, but not so much when I DJ”.
