The alias of musician and visual artist Jack Warne, as GAUNT his work is steeped in a multi-sensory surrealism that draws on his experiences of living with Thiel-Behnke Corneal Dystrophy, a rare eye condition, and which the title of his debut album Blind At The Age of Four refers to.
Akin to his album, GAUNT’s entry into the Crack Mix series plays out with a hypnagogic otherworldliness, as if unlocking a distant memory, hazy and wistful around the edges. As he details in the accompanying poetic vignette below, here he presents music from a range of different artists – including Aphex Twin, Voice Actor, Dinamarca, The Microphones and Flying Lotus – whose music offers a comforting salve.
“Each season, bore a fresh trial.
A crucible of strife, a relentless endeavour.
Twenty five artists,
their music, my solace, my own.
Each melody, a balm,
to wounds deep and sore,
Each note a salve, to my spirit.
Through trials unyielding,
they led me to grace,
From darkness to dawn,
to a better, bright space.”
