In 15 years Hyperdub has expanded from its dubstep roots. It went from popularising footwork – with releases from DJ Taye, DJ Rashad and yesterday’s artist DJ Spinn – to platforming boundary-pushing sonics from Laurel Halo, Babyfather and more.
More recently, the label has signed on Mana, whose synthetically-made orchestral sounds and anxious, crystalline mixes is a compelling example of Hyperdub’s ever forward-facing gaze. Here, darkness and light wrestle for dominance in this ductile mix of hi-definition sounds. And for the closer, it culminates with a classic Hyperdub track.
Kode9, Cooly G and Marcus Scott discuss 15 years of Hyperdub at Simple Things Festival, Bristol, on 19 October
