Earlier this week, we were sad to learn that José Padilla, the legendary Balearic DJ, had passed away at the age of 64.
Across an illustrious career, Padilla helped to define the musical identity of Ibiza. He was part of a small generation of selectors whose approach to playing, and living, was instrumental in cementing the island’s global cultural significance. Among the club community and beyond, he will be sorely missed.
While he exhibited an exploratory approach to DJing and his life spanned a number of sounds and genres, Padilla’s legacy will play out at chillout Balearic tempo. To pay tribute to that extraordinary life in music, Apiento (founder of the endlessly reliable Test Pressing Balearic blog) and London DJ Paul Mison (who played alongside José at Cafe Del Mar) have stitched together an hour of spacey, blissed-out cuts that perfectly illustrate the light and shade of Balearic music – a frequency which Padilla was innately tuned in to.
