Julee Cruise: Mixed by Patricia Wolf

Pop Soundtrack Experimental Ambient

Julee Cruise, the US singer, multi-instrumentalist and actor, passed away last month, on 9 June. She was 65 years old.

Born in Iowa in 1956, Cruise spent her life pursuing a bright and varied musical career and was best known for her frequent collaborations with director David Lynch and composer Angelo Badalamenti. Famed for her dreamy and ethereal voice, Cruise’s contributions to projects such as Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks remain as prolific as the works themselves; sublime songs that heightened the emotional resonance of Lynch’s storytelling.

Patricia Wolf is a DJ, musician and sound designer based in Portland. Her February-released debut album I’ll Look For You In Others explored feelings of grief and heartbreak through eight ambient tracks. Her latest release, See-Through, charted a journey into a lighter and more peaceful place following the events that inspired her first record.

Wolf remembers the influential artist in our latest specialist mix, which features a fusion of Cruise’s songs alongside works by other artists who possess what Wolf calls a “spiritual kinship” with the late singer.

“The enchanting voice of Julee Cruise is unforgettable once you’ve heard it. It draws you deep into your subconscious, luring you to idyllic memories of all-consuming love and also towards its inverse – memories of devastating heartbreak and desolation,” says Wolf. “The news of her passing and to learn that she was suffering so much breaks my heart. I hope she is now at peace.”
