It’s Latin Heritage Month, an annual celebration of the cultures and contributions of Latin American and Hispanic communities. Here at Crack Magazine, we’re adopting the term ‘Latin’ to also celebrate the contributions of Brazilian, Indigenous, and other non-Spanish speaking communities. We’ll be commemorating the occasion with a series of mixes spotlighting regional styles and music traditions past and present, presented by a selection of contemporary artists.
Venezuela-born artist Luis Garban is behind the next mix in the series, turning in a high-energy set filled with national classics and styles such as merengue, pop and raptor house – a raw and energetic dance music style pioneered by musicians such as DJ Baba and DJ Yirvin.
Garban is best known for his work as Cardopusher, an alias under which he’s released on labels such as Boysnoize and Lone Romantic, and worked with the likes of Arca on her KiCK album series. Though it’s the Safety Trance moniker he’s been adopting of late as he shares records such as this summer’s Noches de Terror – an exploration into the capabilities of reggaeton.
He’s in an inquisitive mood here, too, as he takes a look back at Venezuelan sound system culture across his hour-long mix. “Venezuelan sound system culture has always been pretty open in terms of sounds and genres with no limitations,” Garban tells us. “I wanted to showcase some of my favourite national songs that are still relevant today – plus a few imports – mostly from the late-1990s era to the early/mid-2000s that could be heard everywhere from house parties, clubs and weddings to beaches and on public transport.”
