Today’s Crack Mix, from artist and producer Leon Vynehall, settles into a deep and atmospheric groove almost immediately. From there, the hour-long set swaggers through a grab-bag of Bandcamp finds and record shop gems tried-and-tested IRL by a figure equally renowned for impressive mix series entries (see: fabric presents Leon Vynehall or his 2019 DJ-Kicks session) as well as imaginative, at times introspective, albums such as 2021’s Rare, Forever.
Vynehall has been spinning a few more plates than usual over the course of 2023. From campaign scores for Dior to a new monthly NTS Radio residency – launched at the start of September – via tours, an Ivor Novello nomination (for his work with Wesley Joseph) and even a wedding, he’s been busy. There’s plenty more of the same on the way too, largely in the form of an upcoming, two-venue London weekender at Venue MOT and Pickle Factory at the start of November.
So we’re thrilled, then, to have him join our Crack Mix series in amongst all the excitement. “This mix is 99 percent newly released music with a few dubs thrown in for good measure,” he tells us of his set, which comes to a gorgeous close with the jazzy, spacious sounds of Sam Gendel’s Eternal Loop.
