Live from MUTEK Montréal: Ciel

House Tech House Bass Club

For her set at the 25th anniversary edition of MUTEK Montréal, Toronto-based producer, DJ, presenter and classically trained pianist Ciel performed a live set built around her debut LP, Homesick. Made during a period of introspection in early 2022 and released on the label she co-owns, Parallel Minds, at the end of 2023, the nine-track project brought together her love for dance music and sampling with a deep dive into traditional Chinese instruments.

“My performance reimagines the traditional Chinese instrumental sounds from my album into a focused, psychedelic, and high-energy mix of driving house and techno, designed to captivate through rhythm and dynamic movement,” the artist explains. Dive in below.

Who: Ciel, aka Cindy Li.

Where: Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

What: UK bass, club, house, & tech house.

Where: I played the closing set at MUTEK Montréal this year, downstairs at Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) and right after Octo Octa. It was a large venue with low ceilings, and I had a wonderful artist named Charline Dally working side by side producing live A/V visuals that responded to my live PA. It was a packed night and the energy was invigorating as I performed the entirety of my album.

When: 1am.

Why: To express myself and make people feel.
