On her shapeshifting Crack Mix, Los Angeles-based artist Maral takes a look back at the different realms she’s explored as a DJ and producer over the past decade. Moving between rowdy club edits, knotty textures and other more traditional works, she connects the dots between early inspirations and her current sound, most recently showcased on her Ground Groove LP.
“The first half [of the mix] is more representative of my current style of DJing and producing while the second half delves into more chaotic territory – the moments of learning and the curiosity. The freedom that comes from being uncarved,” she explains. “The second half features very old club edits I’d play out in Los Angeles warehouse raves and ends on one of the first tracks I ever made in Virginia as I was trying to teach myself how to use Ableton through sampling.”
