The smoking area is a place of unspoken significance at the club; a space where friends are made and deep meaningful conversations are had. It’s also a place Morgan Hislop honours, and journeys into, with today’s Crack Mix.
Describing this as “an ode to the smoking area”, here the London-based multi-disciplinary artist showcases the vast vibrancy and liveliness that underpins his work; whether that be in his club-facing productions or visual work for the likes of Local Action, Sega Bodega and Tierra Whack.
“There’s a certain buzz,” Hislop says, “of stepping past the soundproof door into a yard of noise, cold air and a complimentary matched energy to the sound growling from the speakers inside. And then there’s that incomparable feeling of returning to the dance and a realisation of a shift in time as the tempo and the tone has moved on without you there to feel it. In this mix I wanted to playfully simulate that interruption and that contrast of energy.”
Offering up a selection of “clattering club tracks” Hislop’s mix features a smoking area interlude complete with catch-up chats set to the thumping background club ambiance. “My internet-ravaged brain never wants to sit still and replicate an hour of the same sound,” he adds of the sonic range that traverses through house, ballroom, UKG, Japanese bass music and much more with a few unreleased Hislop bootlegs along the way. “This is like my peak time kinda sound; rough, erratic and hopefully a lot of fun”, and it sure is. Play this one loud.
