Back in January, the incomparable Nyege Nyege Tapes held a showcase at Kuboraum Studio in Berlin. Once a week we’ve been sharing a set recorded during the night. For our final instalment, Kampala’s Don Zilla takes to the turntables.
As manager of the Boutiq studio in Kampala and a Hakuna Kulala (Nyege Nyege’s ceiling-slapping sub-label) artist, Don Zilla occupies a central role in the Ugandan capital’s music scene. This mix is a perfect example of why the sounds of that scene continue to reverberate around the world. The beats lurch and stomp hell-for-leather while horn stabs and digital squawks relentlessly beat you into submission… in a good way. Strap in.
