Gqom new wave pioneers Omagoqa take control of the 590th Crack Mix. Made up of members Ma_A, KB and Chase, the Durban-based trio have been making ripples in the South African underground over the past few years with their hard-nosed, rough-round-the-edges take on the genre, which they have coined separately as ‘uThayela’.
To celebrate the release of their latest extended EP, Umqhumo Wethu, and to give a taste of their singular sound, they provide us with a marathon-length, 46-track mix. Stacked full of pounding off beats, woofer-melting basslines and Durban underground frequencies, it’s a deep and dark journey built for peak-time dancefloor listening. Dive in below.
Who: Omagoqa.
What: Hard, ass, uThayela, is’qinsi, heavy.
Where: Durban, South Africa.
When: It’s 3am in the morning, the music has taken full control of your body, you’re experiencing heightened sensitivity, altered consciousness, and intense emotional connection to your environment.
Why: Music is a way in which we are able to express ourselves meaningfully. A way that words could never be able to describe.
