As Only Now, Bay Area DJ and producer Kush Arora makes globally-informed dance music that draws as much from the classic schools of electronic music as it does from regional styles such as kuduro or gqom. As his Crack Mix, or past releases for labels such as Infinite Machine (Timeslave) or Bokeh Versions (Indian Unclassical, Vol. 1) demonstrate, Arora often takes a heavy, more foreboding approach when producing; formative flirtations with genres like metal still traceable in his output.
Speaking of his Crack Mix, Arora’s entry commences on a propulsive note with hypnotic tunes by the likes of Avernian, Citizen Boy, DJ Polo and NKC, plus Arora himself. Towards the halfway point he slows things down a notch, before delving into a set of experimental cuts, sludgy beatless offerings and droning soundscapes.
“I put together rounds of my originals alongside some of the most influential artists from my collection,” says Arora. “My palette and influence ranges all the way from old-school kuduro to twisted ancient music and the dark arts, so it’s all here.”
