Last week, Chicago house legend Paul Johnson passed away at age 50.
The DJ and producer had been battling Covid-19, and before his death, was transferred to an ICU. He later died at Little Company of Saint Mary in Evergreen Park, Illinois.
Johnson leaves behind a legacy of being one of house music’s most distinctive and recognised artists; a pioneer and champion of a soulful, deep Chicago sound.
Big Dope P, who’s released music by the late producer through his Moveltraxx imprint, celebrates the artist with a carefully curated tribute mix. He recalls, “From discovering his mix CD In Motion as a teen to working with him and signing his tracks to my label, Paul Johnson’s music accompanied me all my life.”
“Knowing Paul was a privilege. A force of nature. He was 100% about the music, achieved both mainstream and underground success without making compromises and while everyone recognises his immense talent, I’m not sure people realise how big his impact is on modern music.”
“For this tribute mix, I included some of my favourite records from PJ while keeping it under the one-hour mark. Otherwise it could have lasted hours as his discography is pretty much endless. RIP Paul, your music is forever. Thank you for everything.” Now, get get down.
