Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, but now living in New York, Michaël Brun has grown to become one of his island’s biggest exports and most committed platformers. Via his BAYO event series and his productions, his singular approach of blending electronic music with traditional sounds of rara, kanaval and kompa has moved dancefloors across the world.
To get a taste of the sounds that he champions, we invited him to put together a Haitian diaspora-inspired Pop Zone mix, which, over the course of 50 transportive minutes, moves through summery Latine beats and hip-shaking percussive workouts.
“This mix is a journey into Haitian culture and sound, from rabòday to kompa to kanaval, as well as all of the global sounds that have influenced my personal production style that you can find in all my music,” he says. “I hope that you can find your new favourite genre of music and picture yourself on the beach in Haiti.” Pop on some shades, slather on some factor 50 and tune in.
