Japanese DJ and producer Prettybwoy is the latest artist to grace our Crack Mix series.
A mainstay of SVBKVLT – the intrepid Shanghai label to which the likes of 33EMYBW, Hyph11E and Gooooose are also affiliated – Prettybwoy’s hybrid strain of doomy, deconstructed club music meets grime and UKG serves as an fine introduction to the imprint’s sweeping musical direction.
Last year, Prettybwoy released his debut album Tayutau via the label. Written between 2019 and 2021, the record captures a period of global unease, major life changes and personal strife within its 10 tracks. A sense of uncertainty permeates the album, giving it a challenging but compelling cohesion as Prettybwoy serves up a collection of mind-boggling tunes that disorientate the mind and enliven the senses.
On his Crack Mix, the Tokyo-based producer finds himself in the same mindset: “Lost, worried and repeat… life.” Drawing for tracks from the likes of Mars89, Stormfield & Mitoma and Grove, it’s a hard-hitting entry loaded with dancefloor ammunition and anxiety-ridden rhythms.
