Rey Sapienz is a Congolese rapper and producer based in Uganda. He plays a key role within the Nyege Nyege family, helming things over at its sister label Hakuna Kulala. In fact, Sapienz actually inaugurated the dancefloor-centric imprint back in 2018, sharing his mind-boggling three-track EP Hakuna Kulala.
Next week (16 July), Sapienz will release his debut album Na Zala Zala via Nyege Nyege Tapes. As with much of Sapienz’s prior work, the album places his experimental sound palette centre stage, with politically-charged themes and idiosyncratic production elements also present throughout. He worked alongside traditional percussionist, vocalist and dancer Papalas Palata and rapper Fresh Dougis on the new album. Together, they form The Congo Techno Ensemble.
Ahead of its release, Sapienz steps up for the next instalment in our Crack Mix series. His loose and frenetic mix was performed live and is comprised of all-original, unreleased material. No tracklist for this one, so sit back and enjoy the ride.
