Samrai has an impressive CV. DJ, producer, label boss, SEEN Magazine co-founder, Swing Ting-er… the list goes on and on and on. Right now, though, it’s his work as an artist that’s taking up the lion’s share of his creative energy, with a brand new solo album – his first – out today (30 June) via own Sangha Industries imprint.
We say solo, but the eight-tracker, entitled Work & Roti, does feature a heap of longtime friends and new collaborators alike, including Shanique Marie and Gavsborg, as well as his mum. Here, for the Crack Mix series, Samrai offers up what he calls a “loose companion mix” to the project, featuring “reflective, brooding and brightening tunes”.
This one, by Samrai’s own omission, took a more club-focused tack than initially expected, but we are entirely here for it. “It felt like a fun opportunity to go on a journey into some of the sounds I’ve been enjoying recently from friends and family, as well as my musical community locally and globally,” says Samrai, who peppers the mix with exclusives and personal messages. “Thanks to all the artists who sent over drops for this – listen out for some excerpts from my Mum!”
Work & Roti is out now. SEEN Magazine will take over Manchester Museum tomorrow (1 June) for a day-long event for Manchester International Festival (MIF). Samrai and friends play MIF’s Festival Square, Manchester, on 15 July.
