Subaqueous bass, experimental club kinetics and murky dub abound in today’s Crack Mix; fitting sounds given Saskia’s links to Bristol.
Currently based back in her home city of Tokyo, Saki Yamada – known under her producer and DJ alias Saskia – has become a core figure within Bristol’s ever-prolific underground scene over the past couple of years. Her work – as showcased on recent debut album es for Accidental Meetings – defined by off-kilter and visceral club electronics, textural ambience and otherworldly melodicism.
“I realise how my musical experience in Bristol has broadened my musical horizons”, Saskia reflects. “Being present in a space created by sound and people, surrounded by experimental musicians and kind music lovers, is a precious experience and memory that nothing can replace. What I have learnt through music will have a profound impact on my life itself. The living music on my playlist has taught me the fun and scale of DJing, where I can trace my emotions and mix the tracks intuitively.”
This intuitive fluidity and pure joy in club experimentation sits at the core of the mix she’s put together for us – which features fellow Bristol heads such as YOKEL, D.Ham, Franco Franco, Elpac and Cleyra alongside cuts from Lila Tirando a Violeta and re:ni.
“I’m into playing around 160-170 at first and slowing the tempo down to 130 recently,” Saskia details further. “The body gets used to faster speeds and when the tempo slows down, you will find a freedom you have missed before and learn a new way to enjoy dance. At this point, the music, which can be dark or light, intense or funny, dreamy or reality, traces an emotional story. I like doing this intuitive experiment.” Press play and let Saskia take you on a heady sonic trip.
