This week’s Crack Mix comes hot off the desk of ascendant Berlin-based selector SPFDJ.
Originally hailing from Sweden, SPFDJ cut her teeth in London as a part of outré part collective Universe of Tang and made her club debut a couple of years back at Siren’s London launch party, rapidly acquiring a host of bookings and guest spots from in-the-know promoters and tastemakers such as Ben UFO and Discwoman. Most recently she’s joined CEM, Cadency, and MCMLXXXV as a resident at much-loved Berlin queer party Herrensauna.
Stylistically, SPFDJ’s tastes lie at the more propulsive end of the spectrum – hard techno, EBM and acid – but with an enviable ear for dynamics and a deft sense of arrangement she manoeuvres these punishing selections in a way that is gripping and relentless without straying into stupefaction.
SPFDJ’s Crack Mix goes heavy and fast from the off. In her own words “there really isn’t a lot of breathing space in here,” with picks from Unhuman & Surit, Chris Liberator & Sterling Moss, and Bassiani mainstay Hector Oaks. Hard hats on.
SPFDJ plays at Herrensauna on 23 November and Printworks in London on 15 December
