Crack Mix 426:
STILL & Ecko Bazz

Bass Drill

Tune in to the sound of two vital scenes colliding in this electrifying link up between the UK and Ugandan undergrounds, as MC Ecko Bazz steps up to the mic to deliver a freestyle over a cocktail of heavy drill and rap instrumentals, selected by PAN artist STILL.

Recorded at the Nyege Nyege Villa in Kampala – where Ecko Bazz lives, and where STILL has set up studio – today’s Crack Mix is just one example of the near-constant outpouring of creativity coming from Uganda at present.

Speaking on the mix, STILL explains: “When we received this invitation to do a mix for Crack I wanted to go straight with some tracks I’ve been obsessed with recently. There’s a specific atmosphere and architecture in certain UK drill tracks that resonate with my recent feelings, and I always thought it would fit with Ecko’s flow. I put together some instrumentals and I sent ’em to Ecko who provided a frenetic freestyle, recorded at the Villa in Kampala with the benevolent assistance of the mighty Chrisman. No edits here, no mix and not many jokes either”.

There’s a vitality and immediacy to the recording – the mesmerising result of two contemporary street-level scenes coming together. Anybody who paid attention to grime in its formative years will immediately recognise the energy captured here: the chatter and laughter between bars; the way the vocals clip and red-line as the energy vamps. It’s a captivating listen – an inspired moment of inspiration and creativity captured in vivid detail.
