Sunday Mix: Bendik Giske

Sunday Jazz Experimental Ambient

Bendik Giske transmutes air into sonic magic.

Finding firm footing at Smalltown Supersound – a label renowned for its excursions through electronic music, ambient and jazz – the Norwegian saxophonist and composer has released a smattering of imaginative and intimate releases, including 2021’s Cracks, which bring together circular breathing, electronic production and other more physical techniques to spellbinding effect.

Movement is one of several focal points in Giske’s work. Growing up, he practised dance while residing in Bali with his mother; he moved between the island and his native Oslo during his formative years. Now settled now in Berlin, Giske performs with graceful bodily motion while weaving works that contain as much rhythm as they do ambience.

Commenting on his subdued and pondering Sunday Mix, Giske tells Crack Magazine: “Exhaling motion into space, these wind players, singers, composers, and thinkers exist with audible breath. As long as there is breath, there will be music.” The recording is shared in loving memory of late saxophonist and International Contemporary Ensemble member Ryan Muncy, whose work bookends the mix.

Bendik Giske plays Mutek Montreal, Canada, on 23-28 August
