Chicago composer and vocalist Haley Fohr makes songs that stick with you.
Deep and transfixing, her work as Circuit des Yeux unfolds much like a novel. There are twists, turns and ingenious plot devices articulated through stirring arrangements and arresting vocals, as opposed to new chapters. Last year, Fohr released a new album as Circuit des Yeux. The project, entitled -io, made it onto our Albums of the Year list. At the time, we said that the record “exists in a permanently heightened state, its emotional register set to operatic. This is especially true on tracks like Sculpting the Exodus, with its thunderous organ and drum tattoo”.
Fohr’s Sunday Mix guides listeners through a different side of her palette. Here, emotions are steadier – more at ease, perhaps. “This mix is meant to imbue the frothiness of a winter Sunday,” says Fohr. “It is the soundtrack of drinking a little too much coffee, doing house chores in the afternoon and buzzing through last minute emails before the week begins again. From my record player to your ears, I hope it puts some pep in your step.”
Circuit des Yeux plays Rewire Festival, The Hague, on 7-10 April
