Sunday Mix: Ciro Vitiello

Sunday Experimental Ambient

Working with distorted analogue synthesisers, his own field recordings and more, electronic artist Ciro Vitiello is creating uniquely mesmerising soundscapes that draw from noise music as much as they do ambient and classical. “My sound echoes unspoken thoughts,” he says, capturing its immersive, evocative quality. It’s like “drifting through empty alleys and forgotten corners that feel like fragments of a dream.”

Born in the suburbs of Naples, the artist is currently working on a new album in the city’s Auditorium Novecento one of Europe’s oldest recording studios. The project will follow last year’s The Island of Bouncy Memories.

Featuring some of this recent work alongside the sounds he returns to on slow, escapist Sundays, this is a mix for a bright and breezy spring walk by the sea. Lean back and listen.

Where: I’m at the airport, on my way to Berlin for a show. I’m sending this email from the Specialty Coffee spot here at the terminal.

What: Ambient, modern classical, experimental.

Can you describe your ideal Sunday? When I think of Sundays, I picture bright spring sunlight days by the sea, a gentle breeze brushing through my hair, and the soft sound of waves quietly filling the air.

What’s your ideal soundtrack to it? The perfect soundtrack would be subtle, tender, and deeply evocative music that lets you breathe slowly and drift inward.

How do you like to unwind away from music? Having breakfast outdoors with close friends. Something simple, but grounding and full of warmth.

Describe your Sunday mix: An immersive ambient soundscape, built starting from my own field recordings the soft sigh of deserted streets, the murmuring sea, and glimmers of neon that flicker like fleeting visions. This selection includes the ambient and modern classical tracks I return to most during slow, escapist Sundays. It also features some of my latest releases and collaborations, with recordings captured at Auditorium Novecento in Naples, where I’m currently working on my new album.

This year, Ciro Vitiello is an artist of the SHAPE+ Platform for innovative music and interdisciplinary art, co-funded by the European Union and Pro Helvetia.
