Sunday Mix: Doc Sleep

Pop Sunday Ambient Synth Indie

“As I prepare to make another big life transition,” begins Doc Sleep, “I’ve reflected on moments that shaped me and my musical tastes over the years.”

Hailing from the West Coast but now based in Berlin, Doc Sleep is a DJ, producer and co-founder of the Jacktone label. Her Sunday Mix, which arrives just days after her latest release – a full-length documentation of these changes and real-world realisations – packs serious emotional heft into a subtle, unhurried set that hops from genre to genre, from the ethereal ambience of Nala Sinephro to synth wizard Ryuichi Sakamoto via Laurie Anderson, Low and Madlib, with each track lingering like a thread you can’t help but feel compelled to follow.

“There are the big life-changing epiphanies, but more often, there are all of these smaller moments. A lifetime of small moments, really,” the artist continues. “I have warm, hazy fragments of memories – sitting in a friend’s apartment on a sunny afternoon, playing all our favourite songs for each other, cooking, smoking, telling stories. Recalling these moments, what comes up is how the light looked streaming in the window, a friend’s laugh, sounds from the street outside, far-out record cover art, wonderful smells from the kitchen.”

“For this series, I wanted to make a mixtape that tries to preserve these special feelings and moments in amber. I hope it resonates with you, too.”
