Sunday Mix: DoomCannon

Jazz R&B Soul

South London’s Dominic Canning is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist who has been a driving force in groups like TriForce and Project Karnak, and has shared stages with artists including Celeste. A few months ago, he released his second album under his alias DoomCannon – the nine-track Somewhere In Between, out via Jazz re:freshed.

Rooted in jazz yet shaped by a wide span of influences, the project is a deeply personal snapshot of transition, self-reflection, growth and, ultimately, healing. “The last record looked outward, toward systems and society,” the artist explained. “This time, I had to look inward. You can’t begin to tackle the world’s problems if you haven’t taken time to work on yourself.”

For this Sunday mix, he channels that same spirit, with a warm and restorative selection of tracks from the likes of Donny Hathaway, James Brown, and Kamasi Washington. Lean back and listen.

Who: DoomCannon.

What: Discovery, soul, free.

Where: At home with my family, relaxing putting together what some may call arguably the best Sunday Caribbean roast on the south side of the river.

What’s your ideal Sunday? Chilling with my family and ordering takeout. This means no one has to spend hours cooking away! There’s some vinyl playing in the background, probably Donny Hathaway. Some white wine and a very nostalgic film on, like Hitch.

The ideal soundtrack to it? Donny Hathaway Live (1972).

How do you like to unwind away from music? Usually by watching a film, playing some video games and not having to cook. Ideally, it would be with a hot stone massage. The older I’m getting, the more I’m appreciating having a pamper day. Haven’t had one in a while. Soon come.

Describe your Sunday mix: My Sunday mix is for those who wake up and want some soul and good vibes. It has a lot of gospel elements in there. Due to being raised in a Caribbean household between ages seven and 18, I woke up on a Sunday and knew I was cleaning to gospel music.
