The phrase ‘world-building’ is an overused term in music, but it can safely be applied to the work of London-based DJ, producer and label head, Elijah Minnelli. His particular sonic world has a name, but you won’t find it on any regular maps: Breadminster – a fictional town of which he is the self-proclaimed “Night Czar”.
His label – the Breadminster County Council – acts as the central outpost of this quirky sonic village, and press releases for its releases drip-feed eccentric crumbs of folklore relating to strange happenings like the “Larder era” and the “Avian Purge of 1915”. All of this could feel like a fun distraction if the music wasn’t great. Luckily it is. Cherrypicking from dub, folk music, cumbia and beyond, his sound is as rich and vivid as the folklore he builds around it.
His Sunday Mix adds further colour to the artist’s oddball sonic vision. In his own words: “Folk recordings from around the world veer into electronic and other ambient noises, with some favourite reggae numbers merging into various forms of dub, and occasionally meandering into chaotic sections. Special dedication to Gly-anthine Witherbail from the ‘Breadminster Ornithology Committee & Poultry Kitchen’ for graciously allowing me to use her equipment.”
Elijah Minnelli plays at Meakusma Festival, which takes place in Eupen, Belgium, between August 29 and September 1.
