Sunday Mix: Fred P

Sunday Jazz R&B Soul

What do you get when you combine a deep house legend and a humble mix series devoted to downtempo, Sunday-suited sounds?

Well, that would be a rather special and expectedly butter-smooth set such as this one from DJ and artist Fred P, also known as Black Jazz Consortium. Bringing together tender vocals, lilting rhythms and plenty of soul – not forgetting an overarching theme of love, which is very much in keeping with this time of year – the recording taps into his own personal experience with weekend listening. It also commences with a monologue spoken by the artist, who just released a new album on Private Society.

“When selecting tracks for this mix,” he tells us. “I took inspiration from growing up in Flatbush, Brooklyn. As a youngster I would listen to the radio where diverse sounds played one after another. Sunday mornings were extra special as you would get to hear B-sides and alternative cuts from popular bands.”

Continuing, he adds: “This particular rendition I dedicate to love, the lovers, those in search of and the idea of recognising it when it may appear. What that may look like in our minds’ eyes or sounds to our ears.” Sweet from beginning to end.
