As Hiro Kone, New York-based experimental artist Nicky Mao crafts enchanting music to simultaneously haunt and comfort her audience.
Mao’s fourth full-length record as Hiro Kone, Silvercoat The Throng, landed earlier this year. The album was well-received by fans and critics alike, with listeners drawn to Mao’s shadowy sound design, spacious compositions and cerebral slant on techno. The producer’s live shows have previously been met with the same acclaim. Mao’s live rendition of 2018’s Pure Expenditure LP, for instance, was considered a standout performance at Berlin Atonal that year by Resident Advisor.
Working her alchemy for this week’s Sunday Mix, Mao weaves a thread between ambient elements, twisted metallic intensity and hypnotic chants, and facilitates a listening experience that’s grounded in the ancient world while pointing to the futures of techno, ambient and club music. Tune in to hear tracks from Flora Yin-Wong, Gabber Modus Operandi, Saint Abdullah, Shackleton, FAUZIA and more.
