L’Rain, aka Brooklyn singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and MoMA PS1 curator, Taja Cheek, released her sublime second album Fatigue in June 2021.
Intuition, introspection and a desire to avoid obvious genre markers informed much of the 14-track record, which saw Cheek examining the power of change, and the emotions that arise during periods of self-transformation. It’s a woozy and engrossing album, anchored by field recordings and interludes that transport listeners even deeper into Cheek’s immersive soundscapes.
Her Sunday Mix demonstrates her field of interests. Much like her music, Cheek’s hour-long entry mines strength in the space between beats, verses and tracks. Subtle R&B harmonies, jazz, ambient and understated electronic sounds come together over the course of the mix, supplied by the likes of Space Afrika, Smerz, Flying Lotus, KeiyaA and Cheek herself.
Speaking on the mix over email, Cheek describes it as one to “save for a lazy Sunday afternoon”. Upon listening, we’re inclined to agree.
