Mandy, Indiana thrive off the unexpected, channeling the chaos of everyday existence into a hypnotic and warped macrocosm of their own design. One within which they balance atmospheric, poised sonics alongside frenzied intensity resulting in beguilingly cathartic experience. Their Sunday Mix comes from three-quarters of the band – minus vocalist Valentine Caulfield, who has just moved to Berlin.
“When we made our album”, they tell us, referring to their debut I’ve Seen a Way, “part of the ambition for it was finding sounds and styles that didn’t obviously fit and trying to find ways to make them work together. Consciously or otherwise, we kind of apply this to our mixes too. Everyone chucks in their selections and then one of us tries to make sense of it all.”
True to the band’s form, this approach results in an eclectic listen that provides plenty of thrillingly unexpected sonic twists and turns. “Some of these tunes have been with us on our travels this year in some form or other,” they detail. “Alex has been hitting a deep Suicide phase recently; while Arca blew us away at Pohoda Festival in Slovakia; Ambassade is an artist whose stuff seems to be a constantly with us up and down the motorways.”
“It’s a noisy, wilfully disjointed listening experience at times but if you stick with it till the end you’ll receive the pay off of Oliver Coates’ gorgeous One Without from Aftersun,” they conclude, “Nice one for having us!”. Press play and let Mandy, Indiana take you on a sonic ride.
