Sunday Mix: Martha Da’ro

Sunday R&B Hip-Hop Rap Reggae

Philophobia, the 2023 debut album from Belgian artist and actor Martha Da’ro, begins with a stripped-back prologue, its background noises – think slow footsteps and woozy, alien-like sounds – adding cinematic weight to the track, and the haunting monologue at its core.

This affinity for drama seeps into the nine tracks that follow. Individual and familiar, gentle yet unflinching, it’s an assertive next step from an artist whose prior works include the 2020 debut EP Cheap Wine & Paris (which centred itself around a self-dubbed genre called ‘diaspop’, or music made by the diaspora) as well as acting roles in the likes of Black and A Girl from Mogadishu, plus the French series Lupin.

Da’ro’s midwinter Sunday Mix – themed around “coffee in bed on a sunny but rainy day” – is a lively yet laid-back blend of R&B, hip-hop, reggae and dance music for languorous listening. Tune in for tracks from Daniel Caesar, Yung Lean and FKA twigs, BROCKHAMPTON, The Slickers, Obongjayar and more.
