This week’s Sunday Mix, courtesy of Francis Latreille, the Québécois producer known as Priori, evokes the contemplative mood of his new album, This But More. From Baroque-esque incantations to downtempo dub and ethereal slowcore, Priori leads us on a cerebral journey through his own utopia, where we find him introspective and at peace in solitude.
His latest album, This But More, released today (30 May), abandons the more overt tech-house soundscapes replete in his 2019 debut Where On A Nimbus, oscillating instead between dubby techno and ambient soundscapes, imploring the listener to a point of healing through sensory catharsis.
Perhaps antithetically to his introspective and intuitive process, Latreille is also known for his creative collaborations, including his Jump Source alias with Patrick Holland (Project Pablo) and NAFF label with Adam Feingold (Ex-Terrestrial), not to mention the exhaustive list of artists he has worked with as mixing engineer. While This But More is certainly a celebration of his collaborative proclivities – featuring James K, Ben Bondy and Sabola amongst others – this Sunday Mix mix sounds inherently personal; a solitary rumination that set the tone for the LP.
“I put together an hour of introspective acoustic and electronic music to paint a picture of the mood I was in when writing This But More. [It features] some music I worked on, including a forthcoming James K song, as well as some classics and recent digs,” he says. “Understated emotions and thoughtful sounds.” Listen below.
