Sunday Mix: Sijya

South Asian composer, producer and graphic artist Sijya returned last month with her six-track EP Leather & Brass, released via her new label One Little Independent Records. Carefully crafted with a mixture of digital synthesis and analogue recording, the project explores contrasting sonic textures, weaving unfiltered emotion through distorted layers of synths, guitar pedals and ambiguous lyrics.

This mix channels the same elements of contrast and surprise, shifting between heavy sounds and more ethereal moments, with tracks from Alex G, ML Buch, Smerz, Taylor Skye and more. Lean back and listen.

Who: Sijya

What: Noisy, intimate, slow (for now).

Where: I am sitting at home, with my laptop and a water bottle. I might have ingested some pest control medicine by accident. It’s not ideal.

What’s your ideal Sunday? On a winter Sunday, stepping out in the sun is nice. But winter Sundays are rare where I live. So a more realistic ideal Sunday would be: getting a lot of sleep, watching a good film (if not feeling drained), spending time talking to someone close. Talk about life (don’t live it).

What’s your ideal soundtrack to it? Whatever I’m into that month – that doesn’t change. Fuck using music as a mood assistant.

How do you like to unwind away from music? I have three cats. I like to look at them and forget things exist.

Describe your Sunday mix: Noisy af. Sometimes heavy, sometimes whimsical. Mixed with unnerving moments of calm (much like my EP Leather & Brass). Pure calm is no longer possible.
