Floridian hip-hop duo They Hate Change drop by to give us an hour of sunny Southern weekend vibes for today’s bank holiday special Sunday Mix. Made up of Vonne Parks and Dre Gainey, the pair have built their reputation off their ability to pick from their wide array of influences, from pop to punk, hip-hop to emo, and blend them into singular-sounding, forward thinking tracks.
Starting with jazz and blues then gradually descending into more dancey electronics, before finally bringing the tempo all the way back down again to close, the hour-long mix is a waxing and waning survey of their favourite laid back sounds.
“Sunday is super important in They Hate Change’s history,” they explain. “It used to be the only day we had free from work or other life obligations, so it was the day we would get together to knock out new tracks. We’d link up, talk about the new shit we’ve been listening to throughout the week, get on the same wavelength and start banging out the music for the rest of the day.
“Nowadays on a Sunday we’re probably on tour performing those tracks, or helping run the Gulf Coast’s weekly online station sector.fm. Between touring and running the station we have our hands full more often than not (very grateful!), so this mix is like a soundtrack to an eventual Sunday – one that we’ve never really had – when all the good work is finished and we finally get to relax a bit.”
