TYSON is a London-based singer-songwriter and the co-founder of Ladies Music Pub, the non-profit organisation and social club that launched its own record label in February 2021. TYSON’s Sunsetters / Daybreakers mixtape, in all its woozy, understated and neo-soul-inflected glory, landed on the imprint last month and featured link-ups with fellow Londoners like Coby Sey and Delilah Holliday.
She goes for a fusion of languid and more propulsive tunes for her Sunday Mix, putting together a set that captures just some of the energy of Notting Hill Carnival weekend, but also her own productions: hypnotic, laid-back and smooth. Through her mix, TYSON guides us to a specific time and place on her home turf: “a family Saturday night warm-up session before Carnival; Sunday afternoon outside my mum’s house on the Carnival route.”
TYSON elaborates further on the sounds that make up her hour-long mix, explaining that: “growing up in London in the 90s, many of these tunes were played by my parents, aunties, uncles and cousins at parties. They’re the sounds of London everywhere over this weekend in late August for generations: soul, dub, reggae, ragga/dancehall, R&B. Making this mix I realised how much they have influenced my own music.” Whatever your plans today, this one is a must.
