Raised in Southall and now based in London, DJ Priya‘s musical upbringing revolved around B4U Music, BBC Asian Network, Sunrise Radio, before expanding into rock bands, UK club music and bass-driven sounds. That mix of influences now fuels her energetic sets, which she says are guided by one aim: making people want to move.
After training with Jyoty Singh through one of the DJ’s workshops supporting women of colour entering the industry, Priya has built an impressive résumé, performing everywhere from Glastonbury Festival to the Boiler Room India tour, and even set up her own workshops in Brighton helping others get into the industry too.
Ahead of playing Swaraj Returns this month – an event that celebrates the legacy of one of London’s most influential club nights, alongside artists who helped define its sound and those carrying it forward today – here Priya puts together a mix that moves through Desi sounds as well as breaks and bass, via grime, UKG, UK funky and more.
Catch DJ Priya behind the decks at Swaraj Returns on Friday 24 July at 93 Feet East.

Who: DJ PRIYA.
Where: From Southall, based in London.
What: I work with a lot of sounds, mainly high-energy, bass-heavy tunes. Anything I can dance to! I even managed to sneak a couple of my own tunes into this mix…
When: This mix is made for 1am. You’ve loosened up, caught up with your mates, potentially even spotted someone cute in the club, and now it’s time to really let your hair down. A perfect blend of old school, new school, and recognisable lyrics with energetic drums to keep you dancing all night long.
Why: I started DJing and producing at one of the lowest points in my life. Music has seen me through everything. I’m always listening to and talking about music. I know that no matter what anyone else is going through, when they come to see me perform, I can make them forget about it all, even if it’s just for an hour. Music is the love of my life.
