Serene folk music, lulling ambient and a smattering of more abrasive sounds collide in this specialist mix from Taiwanese five-piece Prairie WWWW.
Formed in Taipei in 2010, Prairie WWWW have spent the past decade-plus crafting evocative experimental music that draws as much from folk as it does rock, or Taiwanese poetry. The group also draw heavy inspiration from nature, which is a recurring theme that crops up in their work time and time again. From the band name itself – which is pronounced ‘Prairie’ without the W’s, with the additional letters instead serving as a “pictogram for a waveform, as well as the imagery of the grass blowing in the wind” – through to their album covers. The latter often feature psychedelic interpretations of natural objects.
The group’s contribution to our specialist mix series takes several cues from nature as well, while spotlighting a whole host of Taiwanese musicians and producers. Dubbed ‘The Scenery of Formosa’ – inspired by Taiwan’s former name – their 60-minute entry pulls together serene compositions, guitar-led tracks and the occasional heavier cut supplied by the likes of Meuko! Meuko!, Chen Ming-Chang and Shikin Rollin.
