London-based producer Wordcolour – real name Nicholas Worrall – delivers a specialist mix focused on the sounds of the spoken voice, the sonic qualities of speech and other fascinating vocal explorations.
The recording also features a track, Duet, from Worrall’s debut album The trees were buzzing, and the grass, which landed in June via Houndstooth. Collaborative in nature and cinematic in structure, the record made sense of Worrall’s wide-roaming interests and musical exploits thus far and compacted them into 10 immersive tracks.
Speaking on his mix, which delves even deeper into the inspirations that continue to fuel his work – from club sounds to experimental vocal work – Worrall said: “I love the sound of the human voice. The sounds of speaking, but also the whole spectrum of vocal sounds and non-verbal noises. These unsung sounds are something I’ve always explored as Wordcolour, and I wanted to create a mix that really dug deep into this world. Moving through rap, techno, jazz, loads of experimental vocal music and a few other oddities, this mix focuses on the sound of the voice when doing anything but singing.”
